Seattle rapper Grieves built his reputation on the Pacific Northwest hip-hop scene with introspective lyrics that addressed everything from failed romances to addiction and poverty. He eventually attracted the attention of his heroes in the group Atmosphere, who signed him to their label Rhymesayers Entertainment in 2010. The last few years have seen Grieves reassess (if not reinvent) his approach: Last year’s “Running Wild” album, recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, with producer Chords, adds some levity to Grieves’ typically dark themes (check out goofy party anthems “What it Dew” and “Boop Bop Da Willy Willy”) while his recent collaboration with Fearce Vill and Grynch in the new group Greater Than found him sitting in the producer’s chair. Bend will get tastes of both projects when Grieves and Greater Than perform at Volcanic Theatre Pub on Saturday.
Grieves, with Greater Than, Tyler Martian: 9 p.m. Saturday; $15 plus fees in advance, $17 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatre.com or 541-323-1881.
