Time was running short, and Ron Kidder had a feeling it just wasn’t going to be his team’s night.
“To tell the truth,” the Summit coach said later, “I thought this was going to a draw.”
But Kaden Barker and Kyle Capdevila conspired for a goal with just four minutes left, and the Storm outlasted Bend High 1-0 Wednesday night in the Class 6A Mountain Valley Conference boys soccer opener for both teams.
Capdevila scored on a header from about 10 yards out off Barker’s cross from the left side to lift the No. 2-ranked Storm (7-1 overall) to the home-field victory.
“We finally beat their keeper,” said Kidder, referring to the strong play of Lava Bears goalie Bryan Brown. “We put some pretty good scoring opportunities on him, and we finally got one in.”
Bend coach Nils Eriksson said his team was somewhat short-handed for Wednesday’s match, but he liked his players’ effort.
“They started to play a little bit more on our half (of the field) in the second half,” said Eriksson, “and I think we got tired a little bit.”
“Bend played really hard tonight,” said Kidder. “We had to match their energy.”
Kidder acknowledged his defense, which posted the Storm’s sixth shutout of the season.
The Lava Bears (3-3-1) are on the road again Saturday, taking on McKay in a conference match in Salem.
“At times tonight I thought we played very well,” said Eriksson, whose team was a Class 5A state semifinalist last season. “We’re stepping up,” he added. “We’re getting better as the season goes on.”
Summit is at home Saturday for an MVC match against McNary of Keizer, which as of late Wednesday was ranked No. 4 in 6A.
