Details: A $6 million three-story building for Northwest Self Storage is due to be complete by the end of November, said Steven Boothroyd, site superintendent for Able General Contracting.

Northwest is one of three storage companies putting up multistory buildings in Bend. Multistory storage buildings are common in larger metro areas, Boothroyd said, but Northwest waited until the population of Bend reached a certain size before beginning the project, which is at 62939 N. U.S. Highway 97.

The building will be 80,000 square feet with 584 units, Boothroyd said. The storage units will be heated, but not cooled, and served by two freight elevators, he said.

Built of concrete and metal, the building will be sided in metal with windows and awnings to break up the visual effect of long walls, Boothroyd said.

Northwest Self Storage is keeping Able busy in Central Oregon. The general contractor just finished expanding Northwest’s Old Mill property and next year will start on an expansion of the storage business in Terrebonne, Boothroyd said.

Storage buildings can be finished relatively quickly, but the availability of steel can affect construction timelines, Boothroyd said. The N. Third Street project has already seen at least 30 semitruck loads of steel delivered, he said. “Steel is getting harder and harder to get. The West Coast is booming right now.”
