The Deschutes Land Trust has secured a new 30-acre parcel along the banks of the Metolius River.

The Bend-based land trust, which works with public and private landowners to secure land along the Deschutes River and its tributaries, announced Tuesday that it received the Metolius River Preserve from The Nature Conservancy. The preserve, located 8 miles downstream from the river’s headwaters, was gifted to The Nature Conservancy in the early 1980s by the Erskine B. Wood family, according to a news release from the land trust.

The parcel contains river frontage, a forest containing pine, cedar and spruce trees and a fen, a particular kind of wetland that’s rare east of the Cascades, according to Brad Chalfant, executive director of the Deschutes Land Trust.

The land trust is developing management plans for the preserve to guide future stewardship. The organization will be offering limited guided tours of the preserve until those plans are complete. Visit www.deschuteslandtrust.org/hikes for more information.
