As of Tuesday night, with just seven days until the election, less than a third of voters in Central Oregon had returned their ballots, although turnout in Deschutes County has been good for an off-year election.
Now, with just about a week to go, those who plan to vote should also plan on delivering ballots to one of several official drop-off sites in every county. Drop-off sites are listed on each county clerk’s website.
In Deschutes County, about 27 percent of voters had returned ballots as of Tuesday night. In Crook County, that number stood at 30.53 percent and in Jefferson County it was 25.28 percent. That may we’re on the way to setting an off-year election record, though it is too soon to know for certain.
There are important questions on the ballot this year. Statewide, we’ll not only choose a governor for the next four years, but decide the fates of ballot measures dealing with everything from taxes to immigrants to abortion. Voters in all three counties will have a say on who will represent the 2nd District in Congress, as well as who will represent them during the 2019 session of the Oregon Legislature.
There are a range of contested races in Deschutes County, Jefferson County voters will decide the fate of a jail levy, and in Crook County the Bowman Museum seeks an extension of its operating levy.
It’s exceptionally easy to vote in Oregon, even at this late date. With important issues and offices to be decided, you still can — and should — have your say.
