MADRAS — Andres Acuna scored on a first-half penalty kick, Omar Diaz scored off a corner kick midway through the second half, and Madras checked into the Class 4A boys soccer semifinals Saturday with a 2-1 win over Newport.

The White Buffaloes will travel Tuesday to Woodburn, where a win over the Bulldogs would put Madras in next Saturday’s 4A state championship final. Woodburn, the No. 3 seed, advanced Saturday with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Valley Catholic to improve to 15-1 for the season.

Saturday at Madras, the visiting Cubs avoided a shutout with a goal against the White Buffaloes’ reserves in the match’s closing moments.

“Our defense pretty much shut them down,” said Madras coach Clark Jones. “Byron Patt (the Buffs’ goalie) made two or three decent saves, but he really wasn’t challenged much.” Jones added that midfielders Tyriek Rodriguez, Melchor Olivera, Yahir Aguirre and Acuna “made it easy for the defense.”

Acuna’s PK goal was the result of Rodriguez being fouled in the box in the 37th minute. Diaz doubled the Madras lead 20 minutes into the second half, converting after a corner kick by Leo Gutierrez.

No. 15 seed Newport (10-7) had won four in a row entering Saturday’s quarterfinal, including an across-the-state 2-1 first-round win at No. 2 seed Ontario last Tuesday.

La Salle Prep 2, Ridgeview 0: MILWAUKEE — No. 8 seed Ridgeview went toe-to-toe with No. 1 La Salle well into the second half before the host Falcons broke a scoreless tie with a penalty kick in the 63rd minute of the Class 5A quarterfinal playoff game. “They’re a really good team,” said Ravens coach Jimmy Kim of undefeated La Salle. “We were thinking we could go to overtime … the boys played so hard.” Kim said he questioned the call that led to the PK but did not want to take anything away from the Falcons, who improved to 15-0-1. Ridgeview (11-3-2) had won eight in a row and had not lost a match in more than two months.
