Central Oregon teams made some unexpected waves Friday on the opening day of action in the OSAA state volleyball championships.

Ridgeview beat Class 5A’s No. 3 and No. 2 teams to earn a berth in Saturday night’s state final. The No. 6 Ravens meet No. 1 Corvallis for the title at 6 p.m. at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.

Also Saturday at Liberty, Summit will play West Linn for third place in the 6A tournament. The No. 7 Storm upended No. 2 Sunset to reach Friday night’s semifinals, where they fell in three sets to Mountain Valley Conference rival Sprague.

And at Forest Grove High School, Sisters will take on Sweet Home on Saturday afternoon for third place in Class 4A.

In the 5A quarterfinals, Ridgeview’s 25-17, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19 win over No. 3 Crater featured 33 kills and 14 digs by Rylee Troutman.

Other statistical leaders for the Ravens were Ally Henry with 13 digs and three aces and Allicite Frost with 21 assists.

“We felt we were a little underseeded,” said Randi Viggiano, Ridgeview’s first-year coach. “We had three great practices this week, and we’re still getting better.”

In Friday night’s semifinal, the Ravens took out No. 2 West Albany 26-24, 21-25, 25-15, 25-19. Troutman had 24 kills, five aces and 14 digs, Megan Alldredge had 10 kills and two block kills, and Frost and Kennedy Buckner combined for 10 digs and 45 assists.

“The girls are just playing together, playing for each other,” said Viggiano. “They’re having a blast, and that’s what this tournament’s all about.”

As for Saturday’s 6 p.m. matchup against top-seeded Corvallis, Viggiano said she expects her team to be ready.

“We’ve just got to take care of what we do on our side of the court,” she said. “If we do that, we can compete with anybody.”

Also in the 5A tournament, No. 7 Crook County was bumped into Saturday’s consolation round with a 22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 quarterfinal loss to No. 2 West Albany. The Cowgirls are set to face Crater at 8 a.m., and the winner of that match plays for fourth place at noon.

Summit’s day in the 6A bracket started with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-14 upset over No. 2 Sunset. Emily Olson had 13 kills in 18 attempts to lead the Storm, who also got 11 kills from Hannah Sauer and 37 assists from Sasha Stringer.

“It felt like the girls were in control most of the match, even when the scores were close,” said Summit coach Shawnee Hayes. “They didn’t get rattled ever. They played like a well-oiled machine.”

Such was not the case a few hours later against No. 6 Sprague, which won 25-22, 25-17, 27-25.

“The energy felt different,” said Hayes of the semifinal match. “We started to play a little more timid. We couldn’t get our offense going. Things weren’t clicking. When we need things to drop, they weren’t dropping.”

Olson had another big match for the Storm, recording 12 kills.

In the 4A tourney at Forest Grove, No. 5 Sisters opened with a 26-24, 25-16, 25-19 sweep over No. 4 Hidden Valley. The Outlaws advanced to play Friday night against No. 1 Valley Catholic, the team Sisters beat in the 4A final, but they fell three games to one. Sisters plays No. 2 Sweet Home in the third/fifth-place match.
