PORTLAND — Bend High had no answer for Sunset’s dominant defensive line Friday night as the Lava Bears fell 40-7 in the first round of the Class 6A football state playoffs at Sunset High School.

The No. 10 Apollos (7-3) finished with 460 yards of total offense to just 220 yards for the Bears, who finished their season 5-5.

“No one can ever question the effort of this team,” Bend coach Matt Craven said of the Lava Bears. “They played with a lot of heart and character. (Sunset’s) defensive line is very dominant. We had a hard time getting balance in our offense. They don’t really do anything fancy on defense. They do a good job of moving you up front. Our kids fought hard, but we had a tough time with their defensive line.”

Tysen Scott had five receptions for 98 yards to lead Bend, and Payton Davis rushed eight times for 71 yards. Kyle Reed added three catches for 38 yards receiving.

Davis had the lone touchdown for the Bears, on a 6-yard run in the second quarter. Bend trailed 23-7 at halftime.

Bears quarterback Cooper Simmonds was 13-for-24 passing for 245 yards and one interception.

Sunset’s Kadin Williams had 24 carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

“They had a fantastic season, making the 6A playoffs,” Craven said of his team. “We just got beat by a very good Sunset team.”
