Racers, most of them dressed in Halloween costumes, competed Sunday in a Cyclocross Crusade series race on the grounds of Deschutes Brewery in Bend. While most of the events in the eight-race Cyclocross Crusade take place in Portland, the Halloween Cyclocross Crusade has been held in Bend since 2011.
In cyclocross, riders complete multiple laps on a short course typically featuring pavement, grass, dirt and mud. Most races feature barriers that require competitors to carry their bikes, which are mostly similar to road bikes but have knobbier tires and disc brakes to handle a variety of terrain and conditions.
