A Bend man has been charged with arson and burglary following a fire in the historic Thomas McCann house near Drake Park.

The owner of the house, Sanjay Dholakia, discovered fire damage in the vacant house Friday morning. The home, at 440 NW Congress St., is being remodeled, according to a Bend Police Department press release. Fires had been started in several places in the house, and though they had gone out by the time Dholakia arrived, the building was filled with smoke.

A number of items that do not belong to the owners were left in the house, and these led police to Wesley Brady, 37, who was arrested at his residence in Bend. Items belonging to the homeowner were found on Brady’s property. During the investigation, officers determined that Brady needed care and took him to St. Charles Medical Center.

Brady has been charged with arson and burglary, according to the police, and other charges might follow.

The house, in the Drake Park Neighborhood Historic District, was designed in 1915 and built for the family of Thomas McCann, who at the time was general manager of the Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company’s plant in Bend.
