Ducks LB Apelu out with fracture — Oregon starting linebacker Kaulana Apelu will miss the rest of the regular season with a lower-leg fracture he suffered in Saturday’s win over UCLA. Apelu missed the final seven games of the 2017 season and the Las Vegas Bowl with a broken leg, but Ducks coach Mario Cristobal said this fracture is less severe and the senior from Aiea, Hawaii, could possibly play in the Ducks’ bowl game this year. Apelu’s backup, redshirt sophomore Isaac Slade-Matautia, is also sidelined with a shoulder injury. Sophomores Sampson Niu and Keith Simms will fill the void when the Ducks play at Utah on Saturday. Apelu is second on the team with 58 tackles.

Bills’ QB Allen resumes throwing — The Buffalo Bills might have some good news on offense, for once. Rookie quarterback Josh Allen resumed throwing for the first time in three weeks since spraining his right elbow, and there is a possibility he could play against the New York Jets this weekend. Coach Sean McDermott would not rule out Allen from playing Sunday, but is taking a cautious approach. Allen began testing his arm on Friday, and continued through the weekend, McDermott said. On Monday, Allen threw about 100 passes during a workout.

TENNIS

Season’s over for Nadal — Rafael Nadal pulled out of the season-ending ATP Finals because of an abdominal injury and had surgery on his right ankle Monday. Nadal announced on Twitter that he is done for the year, citing the stomach muscle issue that forced him to withdraw from last week’s Paris Masters. He added that he decided to have the ankle operation so he can start 2019 healthy. Nadal has not competed since he retired from his U.S. Open semifinal because of a painful right knee. He lost his No. 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic on Monday. Because Nadal’s season is over, Djokovic is assured of finishing the year atop the ATP rankings for the fifth time. Nadal, 32, ends 2018 with a 45-4 record and five titles, including his 17th Grand Slam trophy at the French Open in June.

BASKETBALL

Pritchard due back for Ducks — With guard Payton Pritchard on the sideline, Oregon had 19 turnovers during its exhibition victory over Western Oregon, which was not doing much to push the pace. Portland State will look to speed up the Ducks on Tuesday night, but Pritchard will have the ball back in his hands when No. 14 Oregon hosts the Vikings to open the regular season. “They play a unique style and they are going to press us for 40 minutes,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said Monday. “We are going to have to handle the ball a lot better than we did in the exhibition game.” Pritchard sat out Thursday’s 77-58 exhibition win with bruised ribs, but he was back at practice Saturday.
