A levy that would have generated nearly $1 million for the La Pine Park & Recreation district seems likely to fail.

Votes against ballot measure 9-124, which increases the park district’s tax rate over a 5-year period, significantly outweighed votes for the measure in Tuesday’s general election.

The levy would add an additional 22 cents per $1,000 in assessed value within the district’s boundaries beginning July 1, 2019, on top of the park district’s permanent tax rate, which is set at 30 cents per $1,000.

For example, Gary Gordon, chair of the park district’s board of directors, said in August that owners of property with an assessed value of $200,000 could expect to pay an extra $44 per year. The park district predicted that the levy would generate an additional $959,000 from 2019 through 2024.

If the levy passed, Gordon said the money would go toward facility maintenance and security, along with expanding programs.
