BASEBALL

Sabathia staying with Yankees — C.C. Sabathia is staying with the New York Yankees for an 11th season, agreeing to an $8 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement is subject to a successful physical exam. The deal does not include any performance bonuses. The 38-year-old left-hander went 9-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts this year. He had surgery on his right knee after the 2010 season, in July 2014, after the 2016 season and again last month. Sabathia pitches with a brace on the knee and needs periodic injections there during the season. He is 129-80 for the Yankees, and his new deal boosts his pay from New York to $229 million over 11 seasons.

A’s Beane named top exec — Oakland Athletics executive vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane has been voted the inaugural Major League Baseball Executive of the Year. Tampa Bay general manager Erik Neander and Milwaukee general manager David Stearns tied for second, MLB said Monday at the annual GM meetings, without announcing the totals. Each team had one vote, which had to be submitted by the end of the regular season. Beane, 56, has headed baseball operations for the A’s since after the 1997 season, first as general manager, and in his current role since after the 2015 season. Oakland had the fourth-best record in the major leagues this year at 97-65 and lost to the New York Yankees in the American League wild-card game. The A’s had the 28th-highest payroll as of Aug. 31 at $77.8 million, ahead of only the Chicago White Sox ($71.3 million) and Tampa Bay ($70.5 million).

SWIMMING

Ex-world champ Magnini banned 4 years for doping — Two-time swimming world champion Filippo Magnini has been banned for four years for doping. Italy’s anti-doping agency issued the verdict for the retired swimmer on Tuesday, and gave the same sentence to Magnini’s relay teammate, Michele Santucci. Both were found guilty of using and attempting to use banned substances. The swimmers were linked to nutritionist Guido Porcellini, who was banned for 30 years for distributing illegal drugs. Magnini, who won the 100-meter freestyle at the 2005 and 2007 world championships and a relay bronze at the 2004 Olympics, has never tested positive and maintains that he never doped.

SOFTBALL

Standout UO catcher to transfer — Oregon softball is losing its starting catcher. Sophomore Mary Iakopo, a second-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman honoree last season, has left the program. Iakopo, who hit .306 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs last season, is the third player to leave the program this fall. All-America pitcher Miranda Elish and utility player Lauren Burke both left last month to play for former Oregon coach Mike White at Texas.
