Hailing from the fertile hip-hop scene of Inglewood, California, King Lil G — born Alex Gonzalez — was raised by his single mother and fell into the gang lifestyle early, eventually doing time in jail, according to his online biography. But music offered a saving grace, particularly artists such as Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E mixed with the traditional Mexican folk ballads he heard growing up. Today, he’s racked up more than 100 million views on YouTube and a series of albums and mixtapes packed with thoughtful rhymes analyzing his rough past and championing social and political awareness. The Mexican-American rapper released “Paint the City Blue” and “Blessed By God” this year, and will bring his Top Shelf Tour with Georgia rapper Rittz to the Domino Room on Saturday.
