Hirscher edges Kristoffersen to win slalom opener — Marcel Hirscher posted the fastest time in both runs to win the season-open men’s World Cup slalom on Sunday. The seven-time overall champion edged Henrik Kristoffersen twice, and finished the race 0.09 seconds ahead of the Norwegian. The rest of field was more than 1.4 seconds behind. Hirscher and Kristoffersen were 1-2 in the discipline standings for each of the past three seasons. The race was the first of the men’s season.

Les Miles signs 5-year contract to coach Kansas — Former LSU coach Les Miles has been hired to lead Kansas’ downtrodden football program. Kansas announced the hiring Sunday. Miles signed a five-year contract that will pay him $2,775,000 annually. The 65-year-old Miles spent 11 years at LSU, winning a national championship in 2007.
