CROSS-COUNTRY

Locals qualify for Jr. Olympic nationals — More than two dozen Central Oregon Running Klub (CORK) athletes qualified for national competition with high places at the USA Track & Field Region 13 cross-country meet Nov. 17 in Yakima, Washington. The top five teams and top 30 individuals in each age division qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic championships Dec. 8 in Reno, Nevada. Among the CORK qualifiers was the regional-champion team in the girls 9-10 division (Lauren Willard, first place; Skye Knox, third; Elizabeth Connolly, 16th; Kaitlyn Kirsch, 29th; Lillian Regnier; Liv Carr; Lila Carter; Lucy Keel). Also qualifying as a team for CORK were the 11-12 girls (second place team; Kate Hagerty, second; Taylin Bowen, fifth; Ainslie Knox, 12th; Ava Simone, 14th; Payton Finney, 15th; Ella Renner; Neve Gerard; Rowan Cray) and the 11-12 boys (fifth place team; Kyle Kirsch, 21st; Gavin Willard, 22nd; Jacob Soares; Grayson Moore; Oliver Thompson; Kainoa Pyle). Individual CORK qualifiers were Conner Simone (7-8 boys, 19th place); Barrett Justema (13-14 girls, third); and Elijah Pyle (13-14 boys, 28th).

TRIATHLON

Bend’s Jackson wins in Arizona — Heather Jackson, of Bend, took the lead midway through the marathon run and pulled away to win the women’s race at the Ironman Arizona triathlon, held Nov. 18 in Tempe, Arizona. Jackson, 34, trailed Carrie Lester through the entire 112-mile bike stage but overtook the Australian halfway through the 26.2-mile run to finish in 8 hours, 39 minutes, 18 seconds. Lester was second, in 8:44:13. The race started with a 2.4-mile swim in Tempe Town Lake. It was the fourth career Ironman win for Jackson, who is a three-time top-five finisher at the Ironman World Championship.

OBSTACLE RACING

Redmond athlete a Para Spartan winner — Redmond’s Joe Fonseca was part of a winning team in Spartan Race’s first Para Spartan adaptive race, held Nov. 17 in Laughlin, Nevada. Spartan Race is billed as the world’s largest obstacle race, featuring global rankings and more than 200 events in more than 30 countries in 2018. The Para Spartan drew more than 40 athletes, male and female, competing on teams of four on a Spartan “sprint” race course with more than 20 Spartan obstacles, including rope climb, barbed-wire crawl, spear throw, dunk wall and monkey bars. Fonseca’s first-place team, named “Some Assembly Required,” included Trevor Battah, of Cibolo, Texas; Jeremy Ogle, of Phoenix; and Caitlin Conner, of Houston.
