Editorial: Central Oregon has some impressive student athletes

It’s a stereotype, to be sure, but the myth of the dumb jock — an athlete whose physical abilities far outstrip his or her intellectual ones — lives on.

The stereotype is just a myth, however, as the Oregon School Activities Association’s fall list of academic all-state teams makes clear.

Eight schools from across Central Oregon made the list this fall, including Culver, Crook County, Ridgeview, Redmond, Bend, Mountain View, Summit and Gilchrist.

Football, soccer and volleyball teams were honored, as were cross country runners. Some teams included only young men; others, only young women. Each team had a grade-point average of 3.0 (B) or above. Some, including the Bend High girls cross country team with its 3.98 average, had nearly perfect records.

The young men and women on these teams work hard in their sports, but it’s clear they work hard at their studies, as well. To do both simultaneously they must learn to manage their time, and they’ve done just that. Congratulations to them all.
