Last week’s record: 0-2
Bears -4 1⁄2
What many bettors see as a flat spot for Chicago, I see as Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s revenge game. This will be his first time back in San Francisco since Jim Harbaugh and his staff were given the boot in 2014. In the two most recent meetings between the two squads, Fangio’s defense held the Niners to six points in 2016 and 15 points in 2017. Fangio did not leave San Francisco on bad terms, but it’s human nature for a guy to want to show his former team what they’re missing. With a motivated Bears defense, 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens will face his toughest test to date. Mullens is going to see a lot of looks and personnel groupings that will be complex and difficult to read. If the offense cannot move the ball, the San Francisco defense will eventually tire and give up at least a couple scores.
Seahawks +1 1⁄2
With the Chargers coming up short against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night, Kansas City probably does not have as big of a sense of urgency as they might have if the Chargers were breathing down their necks. Conversely, after the Seahawks lost to San Francisco last Sunday, several teams thought to be out of the playoff race now have a glimmer of hope. After two solid days of rain in Seattle, this feels like a spot where Russell Wilson and the crowd noise at CenturyLink Field can make things very uncomfortable for Kansas City. With all the injuries and drama the Chiefs have endured recently, I don’t think they will respond well once they are taken out of their comfort zone.
Raiders +3
After a season of handicapping the Oakland Raiders I’ve learned one thing: it is almost impossible to predict when they will show up and play a decent game. If there was ever a time for maximum motivation, this is it. Denver is coming off its playoff-dream crushing defeat, and they face a Raider team likely playing its last game in Oakland. Presumably, the Raiders will be hungry to send their loyal fanbase home with one last win.
