A two-car crash east of Sisters on Christmas Day killed a 58-year-old Bend man.

David Jackson, who was driving a blue 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, was traveling west on state Highway 126. As he slowed down to make a left turn on Cloverdale Road at about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, he was rear-ended by a maroon 2001 GMC Yukon, driven by Andria Mengucci, 40, of Madras, according to Oregon State Police.

Jackson was transported to St. Charles Bend, where he died shortly after 5 p.m. from injuries sustained in the crash.

Jackson had four passengers in the vehicle, and three were transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The injured passengers were Delia Jackson, 48, of Bend; Ramiro Garcia, 22, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Victor Cepero, 19, of Peoria, Arizona.

Lauren Bookwalter, 19, of Peoria, Arizona, was not injured in the crash.

Mengucci had three passengers: A 17-year-old boy, a 7-year-old boy and a 1-year-old boy. The 7-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries.

Distracted driving is considered a contributing factor in the crash, according to state police. The investigation is ongoing to determine if Mengucci will be cited or charged with a crime.

Highway 126 was closed for nearly two hours following the crash.
