A pair of rock slides Friday evening closed state Highway 22 for nearly 24 hours, just west of Detroit between the Breitenbush Bridge and Brietenbush Road SE, according to state transportation officials.
The highway was reopened in both directions about 2 p.m. Saturday, but not until road crews cleared a small mountain of debris.
Angela Beers Seydel, a spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Transportation, said the first of the two slides at milepost 50 occurred at 5 p.m. Friday. A second rock slide came down about 6 p.m., just as road crews had cleared the first one. About 300 yards of rocks and mud, along with 200 feet of rock fence, came down on the highway, Seydel said.
One lane of the road was fully covered, and rocks continued to fall through the evening, she said.
Cleanup crews worked through the night and Saturday.
A geologic assessment is underway to determine the stability of the slope, Seydel said.
