Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Kyler Murray announced Monday on Twitter that he is entering the NFL draft.
Last year Murray was drafted ninth overall in the Major League Baseball draft and accepted a $4.66 million signing bonus with the Oakland A’s under the expectation that this past season would be his last in a football uniform.
Murray’s announcement came on the last day that college underclassmen could officially enter the NFL draft.
Murray’s decision could figure as a bargaining position to get a better baseball contract.
Murray met with the A’s and his representatives Sunday to try to find a creative way to allow him to keep playing both sports, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks.
Late last year, Murray and his baseball agent, Scott Boras, insisted that the plan was for Murray to play one season as Oklahoma’s starter and then report to spring training for the A’s.
