Broncos hire 49ers QBs coach as coordinator — The task of modernizing Denver’s outdated offense goes to Rich Scangarello, whose stellar work as San Francisco’s quarterbacks coach the last two seasons led to his hiring as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator Wednesday. Scangarello, 46, is a 24-year coaching veteran with four years of NFL experience, including three with Shanahan. He was instrumental in the development of four quarterbacks in San Francisco, starting with Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard in 2017. He helped Jimmy Garoppolo adjust after a midseason trade from New England that season, and Garoppolo won his first five starts. After injuries to Garoppolo and Beathard last season, Scangarello helped undrafted free agent Nick Mullens go from third-stringer to starter. In eight games, Mullens averaged 285 yards passing and completed 64 percent of his passes. He led the 49ers to a win over Denver in December . The Broncos have been unstable at quarterback ever since Peyton Manning’s retirement following their Super Bowl win three years ago.

Ex-big leaguer Wetteland charged with child sex abuse — John Wetteland, a former All-Star and World Series MVP, has been charged in Texas with continuous sex abuse of a child under age 14. Wetteland, 52, was arrested Monday and freed on $25,000 bond, according to Denton County jail records. Wetteland lives in the Dallas-area suburb of Trophy Club. Bartonville Police Chief Bobby Dowell said the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services contacted his office last week. After an investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Wetteland, who was taken into custody by Denton County sheriff’s deputies. Dowell said that because of the nature of the offense and the stage of the investigation, he had no further details to release. Wetteland was MVP of the 1996 World Series when he helped the New York Yankees beat the Atlanta Braves. He posted four saves in that Series, which remains a major league record. He has also been inducted into the Texas Rangers’ Hall of Fame. Wetteland, a three-time All-Star, ranks 15th on the all-time saves list with 330 in a 12-season career that also included stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Montreal Expos.
