Officials confirmed a person died Thursday afternoon in a fall at Smith Rock State Park.
At 2:30 p.m., a 911 caller reported a person fell near the back of the park, near the Monkey Face formation.
“Unfortunately, the subject did not survive,” said Sgt. Nathan Garibay of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Garibay could not confirm, however, if the person was a climber.
Garibay said officials will release the person’s name after they’ve notified additional family members.
Responding to the incident were the Redmond Fire Department and Deschutes County Search and Rescue, as well as park rangers.
This is the ninth death at Smith Rock since 2002. The causes of death vary from critical health issues to falls.
In April, climber Alex Reed fell about 300 feet and died as he prepared ropes above a route he was developing at the back end of Misery Ridge Trail.
