SALEM — Mountain View got 14 wrestlers through the quarterfinal round, and the Cougars are in second place in the team standings going into the final day of the Class 6A Mountain Valley Conference championships.

The two-day district meet at Sprague High School concludes on Saturday, when the semifinal round starts at 10 a.m.

Sprague led the eight-team standings through Friday’s action with 212.5 points. Mountain View was second at 158.5. McKay was third at 94.5, and Bend High was fourth with 91 points. Summit scored 31 first-day points and was in eighth place.

Mountain View coach Les Combs said things could not have unfolded much better for the Cougars, who took 21 wrestlers to the tournament and have 14 still in championship contention.

“Everything pretty much went as planned,” said Combs. “The kids wrestled well.”

The host Olympians have a solid lead and advanced 18 wrestlers through the quarterfinals.

But Combs was not prepared to count his team out.

“It’s going to be all about the semifinals,” said the veteran Mountain View coach. “The semifinals will determine if we can make a run at them.”

The Cougars have a semifinalist in 12 of the 14 weight classes, two each at 126 pounds (No. 2 seed Ryder Fassett, No. 4 Trent Mills) and 145 pounds (No. 2 Cannon Potts, No. 4 Tanner Higham). Other Mountain View semifinalists are Caleb Potts (No. 2 at 106 pounds), Tyson Oliver (No. 1 at 113), Nathan Jones (No. 3 at 120), Holden Korish (No. 5 at 132), Beau Ohlson (No. 1 at 138), Carson Fassett (No. 1 at 152), Leslie Combs (No. 3 at 160), Colton Burkhardt (No. 1 at 170), Blake Ohlson (No. 2 at 182) and Jacob Conklin (No. 2 at 220).

Bend advanced seven to the semis, including No. 1 seeds James Anderson at 132 pounds and Payton Davis at 182.

Other Lava Bears still in the championship hunt are Cole Buckley (No. 6 at 106), Jonovan King (No. 5 at 138), Nathan Denney (No. 2 at 195) and Jacob Lehnherr (No. 4 at 220).

The top three finishers in each weight class automatically qualify for the state championship meet next week in Portland. Some fourth-place finishers also will qualify based on criteria calculated by the OSAA.

Also Friday:

Culver in lead after 1st day: HALFWAY — Culver leads the 2A/1A Special District 4 championships with 114 points after the first day of the two-day tournament at Pine Eagle High School.

Pine Eagle is in second place with 66 points, and Crane is third in the 12-team field with 65.5 points.

The Bulldogs have a semifinalist in 11 of 14 weight classes. Culver coach J.D. Alley noted the solid performances of Jordan Piercy at 113 pounds, Anthony Hood at 132 pounds and Hunter Augustynov at 145 pounds.

Piercy defeated John Otley of Crane 5-4. Hood pinned Jack Deem of Union/Cove in 4:33, and Augustynov won a major decision over MyKail Foster of Imbler, 12-1.
