Former Duck Ngata retires in style — Haloti Ngata upped the ante when it comes to retirement announcements. The former Oregon Duck star announced his retirement from the NFL in an Instgram post that showed him standing atop Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa holding a banner that read, “I am retiring from the NFL on top.” Ngata, 35, played 13 seasons in the NFL with three teams — the Baltimore Ravens (2006-14), Detroit Lions (2015-17) and the Philadelphia Eagles (2018). The Ravens used their first-round pick (No. 12) to select the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Ngata in the 2006 NFL draft. Ngata won a Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2013. He was selected to the Pro Bowl five times and was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2010 and 2011. Ngata helped anchor the rugged Ravens defense as a run-stopper who was also able to pressure the quarterback up the middle. The Ravens finished among the top-five in the NFL in run defense in seven of Ngata’s nine seasons in Baltimore.
Rams sign Bortles to back up Goff — The Rams added depth at quarterback Monday, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with former Jacksonville Jaguars starter Blake Bortles. Terms were not released, but the Jaguars reportedly owe Bortles $6.5 million, so the Rams almost certainly negotiated a bargain for Bortles to back up Jared Goff. Bortles, 26, replaces Sean Mannion, an unrestricted free agent. Bortles, the No. 3 pick in the 2014 draft, was released by the Jaguars last week as the team prepared to sign Nick Foles. Bortles compiled a 24-49 record as a starter. He helped lead the Jaguars to the 2017 AFC title game, and before last season received an extension that included $26.5 million in guarantees. But in 13 games last season, he passed for only 13 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions, and was replaced by Cody Kessler.

Ronaldo charged with making provocative gesture — UEFA has charged Cristiano Ronaldo for a provocative gesture mocking Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone after Juventus eliminated the Spanish club from the Champions League. UEFA says its disciplinary panel will judge the charge of “improper conduct” on Thursday. Simeone was fined $22,700 by UEFA for making an obscene gesture after Atletico took the lead in a 2-0 win over Juventus in the first leg. Ronaldo’s hat trick in the 3-0 win in the return leg in Turin last week sent Juventus to the quarterfinals. Ronaldo celebrated at the final whistle by mimicking Simeone’s gesture. When Ronaldo played for Real Madrid, he twice won Champions League finals against Atletico.
U.S. coach announces position changes — New U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter announced an intriguing position change after his first training session with the full American player pool Monday, moving Tyler Adams to right back and DeAndre Yedlin to wide midfield. Yedlin, at 25, is among the veterans retained after the failure to qualify for last year’s World Cup. He has been primarily a right back for the national team and Newcastle in England. Adams, a 20-year-old, has been a central midfielder for the national team, the New York Red Bulls and now RB Leipzig in Germany. “This is the beginning phases and we want to test it and we want to see how it looks and we want to see how he adapts and what it gives our team overall,” Berhalter said. Preparing for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June, the Americans play exhibitions against Ecuador on Thursday in Orlando and Chile next week in Houston.
