RUGBY

COCC 0-2 in regional tourney — Central Oregon Community College lost 49-7 to Western Oregon University on Sunday in the third-place match in the Region 4 Pacific Coast Championships of the National Small College Rugby Organization Men’s Challenge Cup, a four-team event staged over the weekend at WOU in Monmouth. Jacob Blood had a five-point try and Skylar Paulson kicked a two-point conversion for the Bobcats. In a semifinal match Saturday, COCC lost 27-17 to Humboldt State despite tries by Justin Johns and Kaleb Rauch and seven points by Paulson. Bobcats captain Zach Ferguson won the tournament’s Heart and Soul Award, voted on by coaches and players. Azusa Pacific beat Humboldt State 25-5 Sunday in an all-California final to qualify for the NSCRO Men’s Challenge Cup national championships.

POLE PEDAL PADDLE

Volunteers needed for 2019 race — More than 550 volunteers are being sought to help the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation put on the 43rd annual Selco Pole Pedal Paddle multisport adventure race, scheduled for May 18. The race, from Mt. Bachelor ski area to Bend, includes downhill and cross-country skiing, cycling, running and kayaking/canoeing. The PPP is a benefit for the MBSEF. To sign up as a PPP volunteer, visit pppbend.com. WATER POLO

Youth clinic slated in Bend — A learn-to-play water polo clinic for boys and girls ages 6 to 14 will take place Saturday in conjunction with the Bend Water Polo Shootout tournament at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center. The clinic will be conducted by the Bend Waves Water Polo Club and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Instruction will be followed by games. Cost for the clinic is $25, and registration will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at Juniper. For more information, go to www.bendwaves.com.

CYCLING

Registration open for Central Oregon 500+ — The dates and rides are set and registration is open for the eighth annual Central Oregon 500+ Road Ride. The series runs June 5-9 and the rides include a Mount Bachelor loop (June 5), Crooked River canyon (June 6), East Lake (June 7), Smith Rock (June 8) and McKenzie Pass (June 9). All rides are based out of Bend and feature Central Oregon scenery and sometimes challenging climbs. Riders can choose to ride 100 miles or 100 kilometers on each day, and participants can choose to do any or all of the rides. Cost is $75 per day or $350 for all five days. The event is a benefit for the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation. SOFTBALL

Bend park district sets team rep meetings — Organizational meetings for teams planning to participate in the Bend Park & Recreation District’s recreational spring/summer softball program are scheduled for April 10. Teams interested in joining the leagues must have a representative at the appropriate meeting; meetings will take place at the park district office, 799 SW Columbia St. in Bend. The coed recreational league meeting is set for 6 p.m., the men’s recreational league meeting for 6:45 p.m. Team registration order and fee deadlines will be determined at the meetings. Adult recreation teams will play a 12-game schedule from May 7 to Aug. 3. All games will be played on weekday evenings. Registration fee is $360 per team.
