Earl Thomas Conley, 77: One of the most popular and prolific country singers of the 1980s, Conley had 24 Top 10 country singles in the ’80s, several of which he wrote or co-wrote, including “Somewhere Between Right and Wrong,” in 1982, one of 18 that reached No. 1 on the country charts. Died in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday from cerebral atrophy.

Joan Jones, 79: A low-key but determined crusader for racial justice and equality in Nova Scotia, whose black population has faced discrimination and hostility for centuries, although the black population had roots going back centuries. Died on April 1 in Halifax, the capital of the province.
