Oregon Zoo armadillo gives birth to first pup — The Oregon Zoo’s new armadillo pup hasn’t even developed its signature hard shell yet, but he’s already hit a milestone — he is the first armadillo to be born at the zoo. Max, the zoo’s three-banded armadillo, gave birth to the pup last week. According to a news release from the zoo, Max and her baby are doing well. The pup weighs about 5 ounces, and at full size, will only grow to about 3 pounds. Zoo staff said the pup is starting to explore his environment, and that they are letting the mom and baby bond naturally. They are in a private den and not visible to the public. Visitors can still see the pup’s father, Toby, in the exhibit. The three-banded armadillo is the only armadillo that can roll itself into a ball for protection. It is native to South America, including the dry grasslands of eastern Bolivia and southwestern Brazil. It is listed as a “near-threatened” species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Marion County inmate jumps fence, flees — A Marion County inmate is on the lam after jumping a fence and fleeing in a waiting car Thursday night, deputies say. Jesse Guajardo was being held in the Marion County Transition Center on a parole violation, according to the county sheriff’s office. He’s one of at least five inmates to flee the minimum-security facility in the past year. The most recent case occurred in March. Each inmate was later arrested. Deputies said they found Guajardo’s getaway car at a home in the 4700 block of Whitman Circle NE, but he was nowhere to be found. But Kendra Olvera, a 24-year-old Salem woman, was arrested on suspicion of driving him from the Transition Center. She’s accused of unauthorized departure and driving while suspended, deputies said.
