The Roots, the Philadelphia band that almost single-handedly popularized the concept of a live hip-hop band with a series of critically acclaimed releases and tours in the ’90s and 2000s, have never been busier. Of course there’s the eight-piece group’s day job as house band for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” a perfect fit given the band’s predilection for jazzy improvisation, and a position it has held since the show’s premiere in 2014 (or 2009 if you count its time on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”). Even with that, the group — led by drummer Amir “Questlove” Thompson and MC Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter — still functions as much as possible like the wildly adventurous band it was before joining the late-night ranks, touring on days off and prepping new music (Questlove has teased upcoming studio album “End Game” since at least 2016, and told online magazine HipHopDX in 2017 that the group had a whopping 263 songs recorded). Hot off this year’s Roots Picnic, the band’s annual, Philly-centric festival, The Roots will make their Les Schwab Amphitheater debut on Saturday.
