Roadways open at Crater Lake — The North Entrance Road and West Rim Drive in Crater Lake National Park opened for travel Saturday morning. Superintendent Craig Ackerman says visitors can drive to and from the park using the popular route and access spectacular views of the lake from West Rim Drive. Most park facilities are now open for the season. Snow removal crews will now focus on opening East Rim Drive, Pinnacles Road and Lost Creek Campground. Ackerman says visitors should use caution as patches of snow remain on the ground in most locations throughout the park. Most trails, including Garfield and Watchman Peaks, remain closed due to snow.
Former Disney exec sentenced — A former Disney executive was sentenced Friday to more than six years in prison for sexually abusing a girl in Portland a decade ago, when the girl was 7. Michael Laney, 73, will serve 75 months for four counts of first-degree sexual abuse. Judge Benjamin Souede had previously acquitted Laney of three counts of first-degree rape and three counts of first-degree sex abuse. Laney’s attorneys asked the court Thursday to postpone enforcing any part of his sentence that would send him into custody while Laney appealed part of the sentence. They also cited that Laney is the caretaker for his wife, who has Parkinson’s disease. Laney was also sentenced to 120 months of post-prison supervision, minus time served, and was ordered to pay a $4,000 fine. Court documents state that Laney is a resident of Bainbridge Island, Washington.
