Pregnant women in Redmond will have about two weeks left to deliver their babies at St. Charles Redmond’s family birthing center, which will close July 13.

St. Charles Health System announced the birthing center’s closure in October despite strong opposition from community members.

Hospital officials have said both the Redmond and Bend birthing centers have been operating at less than half capacity, driving up costs for patients and insurance plans. And according to a St. Charles press release, 49 newborns last year were transfered from Redmond to Bend because they needed a “higher level of care.”

Cesarean sections can be scheduled at Redmond through July 10 and laboring mothers can be admitted and evaluated at the birthing center until 12:01 a.m. on July 12.

According to St. Charles spokesperson Lisa Goodman, St. Charles Bend has already hired five new obstetric hospitalists, and five new midwives will also be hired by the end of the summer.
