The Baltimore Orioles have signed the top overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft, catcher Adley Rutschman of Oregon State. The signing reportedly included a bonus of $8.1 million, according to MLB.com, the largest signing bonus ever by an MLB draft selection.
Rutschman’s bonus tops the previous record of $8 million held by pitcher Gerrit Cole when he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as the overall No. 1 pick in 2011.
The 21-year-old Rutschman, a switch-hitter, batted .411 with 17 home runs as a junior for the Beavers this year. Among a multitude of accolades, he won the Golden Spikes Award, which recognizes the top amateur baseball player in the United States.
The Orioles announced the signing on Monday. The deadline to sign draft picks is July 12. The team plans to introduce Rutschman to the crowd at Camden Yards on Tuesday night during a game against the San Diego Padres.
An Oregon native and graduate of Sherwood High School, Rutschman is the second Oregonian to be selected first overall in the MLB draft. Dave Roberts, who starred at Corvallis High and the University of Oregon, was taken No. 1 by the Padres in 1972.
