Local athletes fare well at Junior Olympic nationals

SACRAMENTO, California — Several young track athletes from Central Oregon competed Wednesday through Sunday at the USA Track & Field Hershey Junior Olympic National Championship meet at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State.
The event included nearly 700 athletes ranging from 7 to 18 years old, who qualified through regional events.

Bend’s Logan Hartman, who trains with the Central Oregon Track Club (COTC), competed in the boys 11-12 shot put and placed fifth with a mark of 40 feet, 113⁄4 inches. His top-eight placing earned him All-American recognition.
Bend’s Kate Cheldelin, who trains with the Central Oregon Running Klub (CORK), finished eighth in the girls 13-14 800 meters in 2 minutes, 34.70 seconds to earn All-American accolades. She was also 16th in the 1,500 meters (5:03.55).
Lauren Willard, also of Bend and CORK, finished ninth in the girls 11-12 1,500 meters (5:06:20) and 11th in the 800 (2:29.37).
Bend’s Sara Rivas, of COTC, finished 17th in the girls 13-14 100-meter hurdles (15.62 seconds) and 20th in the 200 hurdles (29.28).
Treyden Lucas, of Bend and COTC, finished 16th in the boys 13-14 800 meters (2:09.81) and 23rd in the 400 (55.17).
Micah Pietrowski, also of Bend and COTC, competed in the 400 meters in the boys 13-14 age division but was disqualified for a lane violation after stepping on the lane line.

James King, a COTC athlete and Class 6A state champion in the high jump for Bend’s Mountain View High School, cleared 6-23⁄4 to place 17th in the men’s 17-18 division.
