Bend, Friday will be your last chance to see the Godfather of Funk perform live. George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will return to town to play Oregon Spirit Distillers with Fishbone, Dumphstaphunk and Miss Velvet & The Blue Wolf as part of its One Nation Under a Groove tour (named for the 1978 Funkadelic album), which also marks Clinton’s retirement after more than six decades in the music business.
The 78-year-old bandleader, songwriter and producer announced his retirement to Billboard Magazine shortly after his last Bend show, at the Midtown Ballroom in March 2018. Despite a late-career renaissance that saw Clinton singing more with the group in recent years, Clinton maintains this retirement was planned: “This has been coming a long time,” he told Billboard in April 2018. And although he denied any thought of stepping down when he spoke to GO! Magazine in 2018 (“People are like, ‘Wow, I thought you was getting ready to retire.’ Nah, we got a record out now, ‘I’m Gon Make U Sick O’Me,’ and it’s like so hot everywhere we go,” he said), he dropped plenty of hints that he was getting ready to pass the torch to his two children and five grandchildren in the current P-Funk lineup: “It’s a little more like a musical play over the years — three generations.”
George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, with Dumpstaphunk, Fishbone, Miss Velvet & The Blue Wolf: 6 p.m. Friday, doors open at 5 p.m.; $50 plus fees in advance, free for ages 3 and younger; Oregon Spirit Distillers, 740 NE First St., Bend; bendticket.com or 541-382-0002.
