TRIATHLON

Local athlete wins Paratriathlon bronze — Jamie Brown, of Bend, captured a bronze medal in his class Saturday at the Tokyo International Triathlon Union Paratriathlon World Cup, part of the Tokyo ITU World Olympic qualifying event at Odaiba Marine Park. The race format was changed from a triathlon to a duathlon (run-bike-run) after water quality measurements taken in Tokyo Bay showed an increase in bacteria levels, forcing cancellation of the swim leg. On a modified course consisting of a 2.5-kilometer run, followed by a 20K bike and a 5K run, Brown took third place in the PTS4 (moderate impairments) classification with a time of 59 minutes, 11 seconds. Brown’s bronze was one of five medals won at the event by Americans, who will turn their focus to the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships, set for Sept. 1 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
