Officials are needed for the Bend Park & Recreation District’s 2019 youth flag football league, which organizers say will include a program-record number of boys and girls this fall. A mandatory meeting for prospective officials is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the park district office, 799 SW Columbia St.

Officiating experience is not required, though applicants must have a sound knowledge of football rules and enjoy working with youth. Applicants must be at least 14 years old, have a clean criminal background and pass a pre-employment drug test. Pay ranges from $12 to $18 per game, depending on experience and the age level of games officiated.

The program offers play for Central Oregon youngsters entering first through eighth grade this year, and nearly 600 players are signed up. According to park district sports program official Rich Ekman, that means officials will be needed for 38 games each week throughout the season.

Games will be played on Sundays from Sept. 15 through Nov. 3 at the Skyline Sports Complex in southwest Bend.
