Bend rapper Jay Tablet, known for his solo work as well as being a founding member of Cloaked Characters and Central Oregon’s ZonkedOut hip-hop squad, may have released his last solo album, “Pay the TAB,” in 2015, but he’s hardly kept quiet since.
Though he stated “Pay the TAB” would be his final solo album at the time of its release, he’s continued to drop at least a single per year like clockwork.
“Girl Like That” and “Let Go” come hot on the heels of “Day Dream,” a collaboration with DL Down3r and Brian Paul Bennett released in May. “Let Go,” a track from fellow West Coast rapper Marcus Cain, features a verse from Tablet in its back half; “Girl Like That” is a solo Tablet joint with help from Benzo and Reed Thomas Lawrence and mixed by Rory Restani at Oxiliary Studios in Sisters.
Both tracks share a similar upbeat vibe with “Day Dream.” “Girl Like That” rides a heavy keyboard bass line into a strong chorus hook, with Tablet and company delivering a hip-hop love story in the verses. June’s “Let Go,” meanwhile, is a summer-ready anthem that celebrates individuality in the face of negativity (the chorus, in part: “It feels amazing when you let go of all the negative s—”).
