Hurricane could affect Boise State-FSU game — Boise State and Florida State expect to make a decision Thursday about their season opener, which could be affected by Hurricane Dorian. The neutral-site game is scheduled to be played Saturday night in Jacksonville, Florida. Dorian gained hurricane strength earlier Wednesday and is forecast to become a powerful storm in the next few days. Officials could consider starting the game earlier Saturday or canceling it altogether. Boise State is scheduled to travel to Jacksonville on Thursday. Florida State is slated to make the trip Friday. Nikki Kimbleton, director of public affairs for the city of Jacksonville, said the city and both schools are monitoring the storm’s activity. Kimbleton said organizers do not want to prematurely cancel the game because the forecast could change. FSU and Boise State would forfeit any neutral-site game payout if the game was canceled due to a catastrophe, according to 247Sports.com.

Spaniard claims Vuelta stage — Angel Madrazo of Spain proved strongest on the final climb to win the fifth stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Wednesday, while Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez used a late charge to take the overall lead. Madrazo took charge in the final 500 meters of the 105-mile stage, which ended on a mountaintop in the city of Arcos de las Salinas. The rider from team Burgos-BH had stayed near the front throughout the final miles in a breakaway group that included teammate Jetse Bol and Jose Herrada of team Cofidis. Bol crossed the line in second place, 10 seconds off the lead, and Herrada came in 12 seconds later. Lopez, of Astana Pro Team, finished fourth in the stage, 47 seconds behind Madrazo. Lopez opened a 14-second gap to Primoz Roglic in the overall standings.

SOCCER

Newcomers join roster as U.S. men eye exhibitions — A year ahead of the start of World Cup qualifying, U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter is bringing in a trio of young players for exhibitions next month against Mexico and Uruguay. He is adding defenders Sergino Dest and Miles Robinson to his player pool along with midfielder Paxton Pomykal. All three have gained regular club playing time. Dest and Pomykal were on the U.S. team that reached the quarterfinals of this year’s Under-20 World Cup. Dest, an 18-year-old who is right-footed, has at times played left back with Ajax — a position where the Americans lack depth. Robinson is a 22-year-old central defender with Atlanta. Pomykal, a 19-year-old with Dallas, appears less likely to get into a match. The U.S. plays Mexico on Sept. 6 at East Rutherford, New Jersey, and Uruguay four days later at St. Louis. Christian Pulisic, the 20-year-old star in his first season with Chelsea, was listed as a forward rather than a midfielder on the 26-man U.S. roster.
