The Bend Senior Center — as well as the new parking lot that serves it — is back and open for business after being closed for renovations in June.

Last week, Bend Park & Recreation District reopened the center after a summer of construction of the Larkspur Community Center temporarily moved classes and programs to Marshall High School and Juniper Swim & Fitness Center.

From noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, the district will hold a hot dog lunch to celebrate the reopening of the center.

Since April, crews have been making progress on the 34,000-square-foot expansion of the existing 14,000-square-foot Bend Senior Center.

The expansion, slated to cost $23.4 million, was in response to growing demand and overcrowding at Juniper Swim & Fitness, an all-purpose workout facility managed by the park district.

The facility will include new fitness facilities, group exercise rooms, a warm-water pool, an indoor walking track and additional parking. So far, the project is expected to be finished by summer 2020, said Brian Hudspeth, construction manager for the district.

“We’re right on track, and that’s good,” Hudspeth said.

People will start seeing steel beams and the walls of the new, expanded section of the building go up this fall, Hudspeth said.

And patrons of Larkspur Park next door will be happy to know the public restrooms could be up and running again soon, Hudspeth said. Power and plumbing to the bathrooms were shut off as constructions crews were working on utilities for the whole site this summer.

“Someone mentioned (the bathrooms) to us about one or two times a week,” Hudspeth said. “I think it’s safe to say some people will be happy to have the restroom back.”
