Along with Keller Williams and, closer to home, Tony Smiley, South Carolina’s Zach Deputy was part of the vanguard of so-called “looping artists” in the early- to mid-2000s. Using looping pedals and an array of instruments — acoustic guitar, drum machine, synthesized bass and more — Deputy combines funk, hip-hop, reggae, Latin rhythms and African music in his high-energy, one-man-band show. His innovative spirit extends to his releases, as well. This year, instead of dropping a full-length follow up to 2016’s “Wash it in the Water,” he released the sunny-sounding, five-song “Red Moon,” planned as the first of a series of EPs titled Z Dep’s (short for Zach Deputy EPs). Deputy will return to Volcanic Theatre Pub on Thursday as part of the EP’s support tour.

Zach Deputy: 9 p.m. Thursday; $12 plus fees in advance, $15 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatre.com or 541-323-1881.
