Big Island Kona Mix Plate

()

Food: Over the years, I fell hard for the mahi-mahi at this popular Hawaiian eatery in the Old Mill District. Last week, I opted to “mix it up” with mahi-mahi and lemon herb chicken for my two-entree mix plate, which comes with two sides. Reader, do yourself a solid and say “mahalo” to potato mac salad. This may be a Hawaiian place, but in reality, potato mac hails from heaven. Is it healthy for you? I don’t know. Just counterbalance it with broccoli, like I did. Soup, salads, yakisoba, sandwiches and stir-fry bowls are also available.

Service: As I approached the counter, I overheard the attendant talking to a co-worker about her own lunch. She used two of my favorite words, “grilled” and “mahi,” and the rest is gastrointestinal history. She recommended the lemon herb chicken sauteed, describing it as “so much better” than the grilled. I chose outdoor seating, and after about five minutes, or 11 groups of moviegoers, the food arrived.

Atmosphere: With its surfboards, wicker wall hangings and framed photos of, and signed by, pro surfers Gerry Lopez and Shane Dorian, you’d never guess this spot once housed a Quiznos.
