Washington’s NFL team is currently undergoing a “thorough review” of its nickname, and the general consensus is the name will be changed.
Washington could be close to deciding on a new name. “Warriors” has emerged as the frontrunner for the new name, according to a report. Kevin Sheehan, a sports radio talk show host on The Team 980 in Washington, D.C., said last week Warriors is currently the “leader in the clubhouse.”
“I would bet big money on the Warriors being the new name for the football team,” Sheehan said on his podcast.
Snyder has been fond of the potential new name. He purchased rights to an Arena Football League franchise in 1999, and he planned to call the team the Warriors.
Snyder has been under pressure to change the name after FedEx, the title sponsor of Washington’s home stadium, requested last week the team change the name. Since then, Nike, Walmart, Amazon Target and Dicks’ Sporting Goods have pulled all Washington team gear that carries the current nickname.
Corporate sponsors Nike, Bank of America and PepsiCo have called on Washington to change the name.
