Seattle Seahawks monitoring Antonio Brown situation; open to Josh Gordon return

Antonio Brown has said there are teams interested in him going into the 2020 season. The Seattle Seahawks may be one of those teams.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks are monitoring Brown’s situation after he received a NFL-imposed eight-game suspension last week for “multiple violations” of the league’s personal conduct code. Carroll added the team is “very open” to possibly re-signing free agent wide receiver Josh Gordon.

Carroll called Brown’s situation “complex,” but added general manager John Schneider is keeping an eye on the developments surrounding the free agent wide receiver.

“What I’d say to you is what we always say because it’s what we always do and who we are. John is competing at every turn,” Carroll told reporters Monday. “There’s never been a process, unless we just missed it, that we weren’t involved with to understand what the chances were of helping our club. He’s all over it. He understands what’s going on right now, as much as you can. It’s a very complex situation. We just need to see where it fits somewhere down the road. That’s all I got for you.”

Brown’s suspension stems from his involvement in an incident with a truck driver in January in Florida, leading him to plead no contest to burglary and battery charges. The NFL is continuing to investigate sexual assault and rape allegations by two women against Brown and allegations that Brown sent intimidating texts to one of the women. The NFL warned Brown that his suspension could be extended depending on the outcome of the sexual assault civil suit that has been filed by his former trainer. The league added any further violations could result in “more significant discipline.”

The Seahawks reportedly engaged in discussions about signing Brown earlier this year. Brown has played in one game, a Week 2 game while he was with the New England Patriots, since 2019.

Gordon, 29, was suspended indefinitely on December 16 for violations of the league’s policies on performance-enhancing substances and substances of abuse. Gordon posted seven receptions for 139 games in five games with the Seahawks in 2019.

“It’s not in our hands,” Carroll told reporters Monday. “Josh did a really good job with us last year. He fit in really well. He was part of this team by the way we opened and embraced his coming to us but also by the way he adapted. So we are very open to that thought, and we’ll see what happens. I don’t know. I can’t tell you what’s going to happen on that.”

Gordon applied for reinstatement in June.
