It was a busy day of event finals on Sunday at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials at Hayward Field in Eugene.

By the time Day 3 of the trials was done, 22 more athletes had earned spots on Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics.

On the track, Trayvon Bromell topped a competitive field in the men’s 100 meters, clocking 9.80 to beat Ronnie Baker (9.85) and Fred Kerley (9.86).

In the women’s 400, Quanera Hayes won in 49.78 seconds, while Allyson Felix made her fifth Olympics at age 35 by placing second in 50.02. Wadeline Jonathas finished third for the final spot on Team USA in the event.

Michael Norman won the men’s 400 in 44.07, with Michael Cherry second in 44.35 and NCAA champion Randolph Ross third at 44.74.

In the women’s 100 hurdles, world record-holder Keni Harrison crossed in 12.47 to pick up the win, followed by Brianna McNeal in 12.51 and Christina Clemons in 12.53. Fourth-place finisher Gabbi Cunningham also was timed in 12.53, but the Olympic spot went to Clemons, who was just barely faster.

Garrett Scantling led the way in the decathlon with a personal-best 8,647 points, while Steven Bastien (second with 8,485) and Zach Ziemek (third with 8,471) also recorded personal bests.

Rudy Winkler set an American record on the way to winning the men’s hammer, throwing 271 feet, 4 inches. Ketura Orji won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 47-7 3/4.

Vashti Cunningham won the women’s high jump by clearing 6 feet, 5 inches. She was the only Olympic qualifier, because second-place finisher Inika McPherson and third-place finisher Nicole Greene have not achieved the Olympic standard of 6-5 this season.
