In the mountains
Chambers Lakes Basin — The grudgingly long but beautifully set hike clocks in at 16 miles out-and-back from Pole Creek Trailhead. Great for backpacking (if you can snag a permit, or can wait until October) or long day hike, the journey takes you through a burn area, then lava plains, and finally to the lakes that sit on the saddle between South and Middle Sister. With crystal clear and frigid waters soaking in the reflection of the mountains, the view will make the mileage worth it.

Tam McArthur Rim — Yes, you can still snag a permit for the upcoming week to hike Tam Rim (at least you could on Wednesday evening). With fewer hikers to contend with, the trail is peaceful and you’ll find more time to yourself as you make your way up the ridgeline for the 5.3-mile hike. Between the mountains, the lake and the northeast view, you’ll probably want to take your camera or make sure your phone has plenty of memory for photos.
