Editorial: Does Bend need a Hope Village?

- The city of Bend had proposed putting a managed homeless camp on a strip of undeveloped city land, seen here in September at the bottom of the photo, near Ninth Street, Glenwood Drive and Bend High School.
It’s difficult to grasp what the city of Bend’s managed camps for the homeless will look like.
The plan isn’t ready. The service provider has not been chosen. The city has not finalized any locations.

The uncertainty breeds questions and speculation. The Central Oregon Veterans Village developed by the Bend Heroes Foundation and Central Oregon Veterans Outreach is one place where people can see what it might look like.
The “might” is important. There is more about it at centraloregonveteransvillage.org. It is located by the main headquarters of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. It’s a great concept.
Look at Rogue Retreat in Medford. We have only visited virtually. Look at its Hope Village, rogueretreat.com/housing-programs/hope-village.
It would be a great place for people to call home for now, which could give them a lever to find more permanent housing and other services they need.
Bend city councilors did not seem to waver at their last meeting in the face of strong opposition to the proposed location of a city-managed homeless camp near Bend High School.
That may change. But the need is there for better solutions than to be satisfied with people camping on the street. Doesn’t Bend need a Hope Village of its own?
