Locavore ditches single-use containers

Nicolle Timm-Branch started Central Oregon Locavore as a way to help small farmers sell their crops.

Customers at Central Oregon Locavore will now have reusable glass jars and other containers for bulk purchases, replacing single-use plastic and paper bags.

The indoor farmer’s market is launching this program with a grant from The Environmental Center. The grant will be used to purchase a dishwasher to sanitize the reusable containers.

To ensure containers are returned to Locavore for reuse in this program, Locavore will require a $1 deposit on all reusable glass canning jars. There are also noncanning jars and containers that require no deposit to use.

Locavore is a nonprofit supporting local food and farms through educational programs and a year-round indoor farmers market.
