Top picks for exploring the fall colors

Clear Lake — There’s still time to check out the changing vine maple and other deciduous trees and plants along the 4.9-mile Clear Lake Trail. The easy hike traverses through dense old-growth and old lava fields while skirting along the shoreline of the crystal clear lake that is also the headwaters of the McKenzie River. The blue-green color of the water mixed with the reds and yellows of the fall colors present will make for a great photo opportunity.

Drake Park — Closer to home, check out the colors throughout the 111-year-old, 19-acre park. With easy, paved paths along Mirror Pond and through the shade trees, the park is perfect for an after-work stroll, afternoon autumn picnic or an anytime hangout for taking in the changing seasons.

West Metolius River Trail — Most anglers already know of the beauty of this catch-and-release stream, and hikers and bikers have traversed over the trails for a lovely day out in the forest. Right now, the river’s banks should be showcasing its full fall display. The 7.3-mile trail here may be a bit longer, but the sights are worth it.
