- “There is no lingering threat to” Powell Butte Community Charter School.
The FBI and local law enforcement are investigating a threat against Powell Butte Community Charter School that prompted school administrators to cancel school for the day Wednesday.
Police secured the school Wednesday morning and completed an initial sweep of the buildings and campus grounds. Law enforcement officers did not find anything or anyone suspicious during that search, according to Crook County Undersheriff James Savage.
Crook County School District spokesperson Jason Carr said the threat was “promoting violence and suggesting there would be harm done to students and staff.” Savage declined to specify what the threat said or whether it came from an adult or student, citing an active investigation.
The FBI also would not comment further.
“The FBI is aware of the threat involving Powell Butte Community Charter School, and we are providing assistance to the Crook County Sheriff’s Office. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we cannot comment further on the specifics,” FBI spokesperson Beth Anne Steele said in an email.
Steele said the FBI regularly works with law enforcement if there are possible threats to schools.
The threat was “specific” to the charter school in Powell Butte, located between Redmond and Prineville, and did not involve other schools in the district, Carr and Savage confirmed. Local law enforcement partners and the FBI are investigating the threat, which Savage said came from a “masked” number.
A text message and phone call to the charter school’s main phone line, which was sent overnight and discovered by school administrators Wednesday morning, prompted officials to post a threat notice on Facebook close the school.
The school district posted the notice on its Facebook page around 7 a.m.
Carr said authorities now are using the text message and phone call to find who sent the threats. He, too, could not confirm whether the threat came from a student or adult.
“To ensure the safety of staff and students, Principal Jenn Berry-O’Shea made the decision to cancel school for the day while police search the school property and begin their investigation,” Wednesday morning’s Facebook post said.
The post said that classes in the district’s other schools “will start on time and bus routes are running on their normal schedules.”
The post said there is no threat to schools in Prineville and said “Powell Butte families have been notified about the cancellation.”
“We don’t have any other details at this time, but we’ll follow up once we learn more from police,” the post said.
Carr confirmed that, as of about 10 a.m., there had not been any other threats against schools in the district and that classes would go on as usual. Carr said the district’s current plan is to have the Powell Butte Community Charter School open Thursday with extra law enforcement on school grounds.
Savage said the sheriff’s office will disclose more information as the investigation unfolds and suspects are located. He said law enforcement would remain at the Powell Butte school throughout Wednesday.
Savage said law enforcement is asking anybody with information about the threat to contact the sheriff’s office.
