Devin the Dude returns to Bend

It’s easy to write off Devin the Dude as just another weed rapper, and certainly, the man himself hasn’t done much over the past decade to combat that image.

But before you do that, be sure to listen to his first four albums — “The Dude,” “Just Tryin’ ta Live,” “To tha X-Treme” and “Waitin’ to Inhale” — released between 1998 and 2007 on the legendary Houston label Rap-A-Lot Records. Each of them offers track after track of deeply chilled rap music built from funky beats, sneaky melodic elements, Devin’s oddball sense of humor and his flow, which is both laid back and skillfully delivered at the same time. Think Andre 3000 if he’d ditched Outkast and turned to West Coast G-Funk and you’re in the right ballpark.

Devin the Dude: $25, 7 p.m. Thursday, doors open 5:30 p.m., Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.
